Dilated pupils

A colleague recently started wearing contact lenses that gave the appearance of bigger pupils. While having some drinks and food with him after work, it started a thread of thoughts.
As the saying goes, the eyes are the windows to one's soul. And indeed, that's true to a large extent, for the muscles controlling our iris, are part of the autonomic nervous system. Much of this system functions unconsciously. Therefore, we cannot consciously will our iris to contract or relax. Apparently, one way of telling if people are lying is through a careful observation of the person's iris.

And somehow, I remembered that ladies in the Western world used to put drops prepared from the Belladonna plant (picture of their interesting trumpet flowers below) into their eyes. It dilates their pupils and makes them appear more attractive.


And I was thinking, when we see something we want very badly, or are particularly excited by something attractive, our eyes widen. Therefore, the dilated pupils' attractiveness could very well lie in the fact that other people think the person with the dilated pupils thinks he or she is attractive, and therefore reciprocates? (Very clumsy sentence). But anyway, I did a bit of searching and found this:

Another thing that causes pupil dilation is physical or psychological pleasure. When someone finds another person or thing attractive, the pupils dilate. In turn, that dilation is often found attractive by others. This is sometimes referred to as 'bedroom eyes' because of its sexual connotation. Conversely, if totally turned off by a person, the pupils may slightly contract. One may subconsciously use these pupil measurements to judge whether they like someone else or not.

I sure do wonder if more people hit on my colleague after he started wearing the contacts. Well, that's another question for another day.

Is this a good enough reason for us to start wearing such contacts? :P Perhaps it may just bring about some luck in the love and dating arena? Haha
